January is a quieter month around the garden and patio, but a little care now helps prevent damage and makes spring jobs much easier.

❄️ Safety & protection 

• Clear paths and patios of moss, algae and fallen leaves to reduce slipping hazards.

• Use sand or grit on icy paving — salt can damage plants and soil.

• Lift and protect outdoor taps and insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing.

🪴 Pots, containers & furniture 

• Raise pots on feet or bricks so they can drain freely.

• Wrap vulnerable containers (especially terracotta) with fleece or bubble wrap to prevent cracking.

• Move tender container plants to a sheltered spot or greenhouse.

• Clean and store garden furniture, or cover it securely.

🧹 General maintenance 

• Tidy sheds, garages and storage areas — dispose of broken pots and organise tools.

• Clean and sharpen tools ready for the busy months ahead.

• Check fences, trellis and pergolas for storm damage and repair while plants are dormant.

🌳 Trees, hedges & hard landscaping 

• Prune deciduous trees and shrubs (except spring-flowering types).

• Trim hedges if weather allows, checking first for overwintering wildlife.

• Clear gutters, drains and soakaways to prevent flooding around patios and paths.

• Feed birds regularly and keep feeders clean.

• Provide fresh water for birds and wildlife, breaking ice daily.

• Leave a few undisturbed areas for insects overwintering.
