Looking After Your Lawn This February
Here are your top tips for looking after your lawn in February Β π± Itβs all about careful maintenance β think protection, not perfection.
πΆββοΈ Stay off frosty or waterlogged grass
-
Walking on frozen grass can bruise and kill it.
-
Avoid using the lawn when itβs soggy β compaction now causes problems all year.
π Light tidy-up only
-
Gently rake away leaves, twigs, and debris on dry days.
-
Donβt scarify or mow yet β the grass is still mostly dormant.
π± Moss control (go gently)
-
February is ideal for planning moss control, not heavy treatment.
-
If moss is bad, improve drainage and light rather than rushing chemicals.
-
Iron-based moss killers can be used late in the month if mild.
βοΈ Edges & repairs
-
Neaten lawn edges with a half-moon tool on a dry day.
-
Brush soil back into worm casts once dry β donβt smear them when wet.
π§οΈ Improve drainage
-
Spike compacted areas with a garden fork.
-
Brush in sharp sand or sandy topsoil to help water drain away.
π Protect problem areas
-
Move goalposts, rotate dog routes, and rest worn patches.
-
Consider temporary barriers if areas are suffering.
πΌ Feed? Not yet
-
Donβt apply spring lawn feed yet β wait until March or April.
-
Overfeeding now encourages weak growth.
π Plan ahead
-
Clean and service your mower.
-
Purchase seed, fertiliser, and moss treatments ready for early spring.
-
Make a note of thin or damaged areas to overseed later.
π€οΈ Watch the weather
If we get a mild spell at the end of the month, grass may start stirring β but frost can still bite, so patience pays off.
- Prepare vegetable seed beds and sow some vegetables under cover.
- Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep birds away.
- Prune winter-flowering shrubs if they have finished flowering.
- Prune wisteria and hardy evergreen hedges.
- Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over winter.
