Looking After Your Lawn This January

January lawn care is mostly about protecting the grass and preparing for spring, rather than active maintenance. Done right, it makes a big difference later in the year.

🌱 Protect the lawn

  • Avoid walking on frosty or waterlogged grass — footprints can damage turf and compact soil.
  • Keep the lawn clear of debris such as fallen leaves, twigs and branches to prevent disease.
  • Improve drainage if puddles form regularly (temporary aeration with a fork on dry days can help).

✂️ Mowing

  • Only mow if absolutely necessary, and only during mild spells.
  • Set the mower high and make sure blades are sharp.
  • Never mow when the grass is frozen or very wet.

🍂 Feeding & treatments

  • Do not apply fertiliser — grass won’t use it and nutrients may leach away.
  • Avoid weedkillers and moss killers; they’re ineffective in cold weather.
  • If moss is severe, plan treatment for early spring instead.

🐛 Pests & problems

  • Watch for worm casts — brush them off once dry to avoid smearing.
  • Check for leatherjackets or chafer damage (birds pecking at turf is often a sign).
  • Keep an eye out for fungal diseases like fusarium; good airflow helps reduce risk.

🧤 Maintenance & preparation

  • Clean and service your mower and tools now.
  • Sharpen mower blades ready for spring.
  • Plan spring lawn improvements such as scarifying, aerating, and overseeding.

🌧️ Weather awareness

  • Keep drains and gutters clear nearby to reduce excess water run-off onto the lawn.
  • Be patient — winter damage often looks worse than it is and usually recovers by spring.
This Month's Key Tips
  • Now is the ideal time to start 'chitting' seed potatoes ready for planting in spring.
  • Plant any seeds ready for the early spring season.
  • Clean old pots and seed trays ready for sowing and planting.
  • Start forcing rhubarb.
  • Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch.
