May
Looking After Your Lawn This May
May is when lawns really take off—longer days, warmer soil, and regular rain mean fast growth. A bit of consistent care now sets you up for a thick, healthy lawn all summer.
🌱 Mow regularly—but don’t scalp
Growth is vigorous, so aim to mow once a week (sometimes more in warm, wet spells). Keep the blades higher than you might think—cutting too short stresses the grass and encourages weeds and moss.
✂️ Follow the one-third rule
Never remove more than a third of the grass height in one cut. Taking too much off at once weakens the lawn and can leave it looking patchy.
🌿 Feed your lawn
May is ideal for applying a spring/summer lawn feed. Look for one high in nitrogen to encourage lush green growth. Apply just before rain or water it in well.
🌼 Tackle weeds early
Broadleaf weeds like dandelions and clover are easier to control now while they’re actively growing. You can hand-weed or use a selective lawn weedkiller if needed.
🧴 Edge for a clean look
Sharpen up borders with edging shears or a half-moon edger. It instantly makes the whole garden look more cared for, even if the lawn isn’t perfect.
💧 Water wisely (if needed)
In most parts, May still brings enough rain—but during dry spells, water deeply once or twice a week rather than little and often. Early morning is best.
🛠️ Repair bare patches
Now’s a great time to overseed thin or damaged areas. Loosen the soil, scatter grass seed, lightly rake in, and keep it moist until established.
🌬️ Aerate compacted areas
If parts of your lawn get heavy foot traffic, use a garden fork or aerator to relieve compaction. Better airflow and drainage help roots grow stronger.
🍃 Leave clippings (sometimes)
If you’re mowing regularly and not cutting too much off, leaving short clippings can return nutrients to the soil (a natural “mulch”).
🐜 Watch for pests and problems
Keep an eye out for:
- Yellowing patches (could be poor drainage or nutrient issues)
- Leatherjackets or chafer grubs
- Moss creeping back in shady areas
Early action is much easier than fixing a big problem later.
- Plant out summer bedding plants
- Regularly hoe off garden weeds
- Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days
- Mow lawn weekly
- Re-stock your pond with fresh pond plants
- Plant up hanging baskets in early May for summer long colour
